Functional Medicine 101: What It Is, How It Differs, When to Use It
“Functional medicine” gets thrown around a lot — sometimes as a miracle, sometimes as a scam. The truth is more useful than either headline. At CLO we hold a clear position: integrative and conventional medicine each have real strengths, and the wisest patients learn to use both. So here is the honest 101.
What Functional Medicine Actually Is
Functional medicine asks a different first question. Conventional medicine often asks, “What disease is this, and what treats it?” Functional medicine asks, “Why is this happening in the first place?” — looking upstream at root causes like sleep, nutrition, stress, gut health, and environment, and treating the whole person rather than a single symptom in isolation.
How It Differs From Conventional Care
Conventional medicine is extraordinary at what it is built for: diagnosing disease, managing acute crises, surgery, infections, emergencies. If you are having a heart attack, you want an ER, not a supplement. Functional medicine tends to shine in slower, murkier territory — fatigue, lingering symptoms, prevention, the “all my labs are normal but I feel terrible” problem. They are not enemies. They are built for different jobs.
Where It Gets Oversold
Honesty matters here. Some integrative practitioners overpromise, lean on expensive testing of uncertain value, or sell supplement lines that look a lot like a sales funnel. A good practitioner welcomes your questions, coordinates with your conventional doctors, and never tells you to abandon proven treatment. Be cautious of anyone who frames “natural” as automatically superior, or who asks you to choose sides.
When to Use It
Reach for functional and integrative approaches for prevention, for chronic issues conventional care has only managed rather than resolved, and for the lifestyle foundations — food, movement, sleep, stress — that underlie nearly everything. Keep your conventional team for diagnosis, acute care, and serious disease. The bridge between them is where real, whole-person health usually lives.
The CLO View: Clarity Before Chemistry
Our north star is simple: get clarity about what is actually happening in your body and life before reaching for the next pill, supplement, or protocol — from either world. Clarity first. Then the right tool for the job, wherever it comes from.
One More Step
You do not have to pick a tribe. The goal is not “natural versus medical” — it is well. Bring curiosity and good questions to both kinds of practitioners, and let them work together for you.
